The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and animal rescuers take part in assisting with the rescue of 158 dogs and 29 birds from a trailer in Leland in this contributed photo taken in August 2012. Andrew and Amelia Millis pleaded guilty to 24 counts of Class 1 cruelty to animals and were placed on a total of 36 months probation and under an order for a lifetime ban on possession of animals for either personal or commercial purposes. The Millises turned over all of their animals to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, and the animals were placed in the care of various rescue groups throughout North Carolina.
Rabon's animal welfare bill calls for hotline

Proposed legislation sponsored by state Sen. Bill Rabon, a Southport veterinarian, calls for establishing a hotline to report animal cruelty.

Rabon is one of three primary sponsors of Senate Bill 209, titled “Responsible Breeding/Prevent Cruelty.”

The other two sponsors are state Sens. Trudy Wade, who is also a veterinarian, and Andrew Brock.

The bill, introduced March 10, passed first reading March 11 and has been referred to the senate committee on rules and operations.
