Artist Bryan Varnam presents Buddy Norris with Varnam’s original painting, titled “Buddy’s Barn,” depicting Norris’ old sign shop on Ash Little River Road.
From one artist to another: Painting makes ailing sign man's day

It was a first-time, memorable meeting when local artist Bryan Varnam stopped by to see Buddy Norris, package in hand.

On a balmy October morning, Varnam, 66, arrived at Norris’ Shallotte home bearing a painting, one he only recently created for Norris.

Norris, in fact, is the subject of the acrylic painting, titled “Buddy’s Barn.” It depicts an old tobacco barn near Hickmans Crossroads that once served as Norris’ first sign shop in the early 1980s, as well as a rendering of Norris in his younger years, busy at work.
