  • Jarman, Simpson honored by VFW Ladies Auxiliary

    The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Calabash Post 7288, participated in the VFW’s annual National Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year Program. It recognizes the best educators who “instill a sense of national pride in students” and stimulate interest in American history, civic responsibility and patriotism. The Ladies Auxiliary of Post 7288 sponsored two teachers this year: Lisa Jarman, fourth-grade teacher at Union Elementary School, and Ellen Nicole Simpson, seventh-grade social studies teacher at Waccamaw School.

  • Calabash VFW announces Patriot Pen winners

    The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) of Calabash Post 7288 participated in the VFW’S national “Patriot Pen Program.”
    The program is an annual competition open to all sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students enrolled in public, private or parochial schools, and home-schooled students. The students are required to write a 300-400 word essay based on a theme that differs from year to year.

  • Daughters of 1812 meet in Raleigh

    The February meeting of the Cherokee Chapter of the Daughters of 1812 in Raleigh was at the State University Club.
    State president Carol Chapuis Canales from Sunset Beach was the special guest and brought greetings to the members from the state society. She attended the meeting with her daughter, Christy Norris, and granddaughter, Afton Norris Kinkaid, both of Raleigh.

    Day of fun for a great cause is April 10
    The St. James Tennis Association is hosting a racquet relay from 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at the Founders Tennis Complex.
    An exhibition will be 6-7 p.m. Free consultations will be offered in the Wellness Center from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. including blood pressure checks, product samples, physical therapy and chiropractic care.

  • VFW Auxilary attends winter council

    In February, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and their Ladies Auxiliary, Post 7288-Calabash, attended the Winter Council of Administration in Greensboro.
    They attended the Joint VFW meetings, Ladies Auxiliary business sessions and attended presentations by the chairman of the National Ladies Programs for Americanism, cancer aid and research, hospital and VA Medical Centers, legislative, scholarships, veterans and family services, voice of democracy/patriot pen and youth activities.

  • BIP director speaks to Lions

    Shallotte Lions reached out this month to the Brunswick Interagency Program (BIP) at Brunswick Community College. BIP Director Greg Bland spoke about the program’s mission at the March 7 meeting of the Shallotte Lions Club.

  • Area student wins state poster contest

    Each year, Lions clubs throughout the world proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art contest for kids encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace. For 25 years, more than 4 million children from nearly 100 countries have participated.
    The theme of the 2012-13 Peace Poster Contest was “Imagine Peace.” Students ages 11, 12 or 13 on Nov. 15 were eligible to participate.

  • Dog chairman discusses Lions’ leader dogs for the blind

    Lion Tom Snively, district leader dog chairman, was the guest speaker at the Shallotte Lions Club’s recent meeting. He described the process a trainer follows, as well as that of the Leader Dogs for the Blind School in Rochester, Mich., to qualify a dog for a blind person.
    Leader Dogs for the Blind would not exist today if not for Lions Clubs International. Beginning with the support of one club, Leader Dog is now supported by Lions clubs throughout the world.

    Munna named Citizen of Year
    The Shallotte Elks will honor its Citizen of the Year, Jerome Munna from The Sign Shoppe, on Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Elks Lodge, 791 Bricklanding Road (N.C. 179). A roast chicken dinner will be served starting at 2 p.m. Ceremonies will follow the dinner.
    Munna is being honored for his continuing effort in organizing the annual motorcycle/classic cars Holiday Toy Run. The Elk of the Year and the Officer of the Year will also be honored that day.
