  • Ocean City Chevrolet donates to area youth baseball
    The youth baseball season has begun, and this season Ocean City Chevrolet is sponsoring Shallotte Dixie Youth Baseball League and the Waccamaw Athletic Association. As part of the national Chevrolet Youth Baseball program, Ocean City Chevrolet will provide new equipment to the leagues and will make a monetary contribution to each league. In addition, there will be invitations to free instructional clinics and an opportunity for community members to enter the Chevrolet vehicle sweepstakes to have a chance to win a new 2013 Traverse or Malibu.

  • West alumni basketball tourney May 18
    The inaugural West Brunswick Alumni Basketball Tournament is May 18. Six teams will compete in a double-elimination tourney that starts at 10 a.m. at West. Tickets are $2; no admission charge for those younger than 12. There will be door prizes. Souvenir T-shirts are $10. Net proceeds benefit West Brunswick basketball programs.

  • Shock wins another shutout
     The Brush Dental Shock (14s) won another soccer match in dominating fashion. The Shock started fast with Kira Frawley taking the ball quickly down the field and crossing the ball into the center, where Ashley Oakes put it in the back of the net. “Kira’s speed puts a lot of pressure on any team’s defense,” coach Mark Giordano said, “and when she draws a lot of players to her, she is capable of making a great pass into open teammates.” Oakes followed with another goal, her second two-goal game of the season.

  • Trojans win golf tourney on windy day
    Staff Report In the fourth Waccamaw Conference golf tournament of the season, West Brunswick finished first by 22 strokes. On a chilly, windy day on the St. James Founders Course, the Trojans finished with 355 strokes. West Bladen and Whiteville tied for second. South Brunswick and South Columbus tied for fourth at 382. North Brunswick was sixth (423) out of seven teams.

  • Trojans’ track teams defeat Knights
    Staff Report The West Brunswick track and field teams beat West Bladen in a meet March 28 in Shallotte. In the boys’ meet, Nolan Scoggins won the 100-meter hurdles race in 15.28 seconds (a regional-qualifying time) and the 300-meter hurdles race in 41.95. He won the long jump (20-feet, 2 inches) and tied for first in the 100-meter dash (11.23). Spencer Waters won the 800 in 2:12 and the 1,600 in 5:01. Allan Plueger won the 3,200 in 12:04.

    Lighthouse run is set for April 20 The 15th annual Oak Island Lighthouse run and walk begins at 8 a.m. April 20 at the N.C. Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell and there will be three distances for runners: a one-half marathon (13.1 miles) a 10K (6.2 miles) and a 5K (3.1 miles). Register at www.lighthouse10k.com or at the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center at 4433 Long Beach Road, Southport. Entry fee is $30 per person for the 5K or 10K and $45 for the one-half marathon.
